Kansas oppos: Where the hell can I read up on automotive laws?

Is there any convenient government resource that will let me read about things like noise limits and exhaust-related laws concerning cars in Kansas? I'm trying to convince my dad that it isn't *that* illegal to lop off my muffler, leaving the cat and resonator in place.

Have some rally fighter.

Usually the DMV or state .gov website has something. Try starting here.

How do Harley riders never get pulled over for noise violations?

Do you have inspections? If you don't, just go ahead and do it—nobody is going to stop you. If you don't have inspection, just cut the cats and resonator out while you're there. Hell, I'd just cut it off at the manifold and stick a header muffler on it.

Just be gentle with the throttle when you are in traffic or pass by a cop so you don't piss people off.

Right?

Hit up the DMV website, that's where I found all the info I needed here in CT regarding tints, sound limitations, lights, etc. Did you know it's illegal to have any non-amber/white lights ahead of the front wheel wells in CT?

That being said, if you chop off your muffler, it'll be loud enough that you'll get pulled over even if it is legal. Have you driven without a muffler before? It's obnoxiously loud. At the very least you neighbors will hate you.

They have mufflers. They're not much more than overglorified straight pipes, but they are considered mufflers.

Actually, the majority of the really loud bikes have straight pipes without mufflers. I have had bikes with straight pipes in the past. No more.

But that takes *money* :P

I guess I could spend $7 on a straight piece of exhaust pipe and remove my resonator... a Youtube search for "3800 Series II resonator delete" reveals much sexy burbles and snap-crackle-pop

I revved up the car with no exhaust system whatsoever, and it wasn't much louder than my friend's stock Shelby Mustang. I was assuming that having the cat and resonator attached would bring it down to at least riceburner-civic levels of loud (though much more bassy)

I removed my resonator, swapped the u-bend and installed a magnaflow. Really made the L36 sing!

I don't know if your H-body has the u-bend at the O2 sensor like my W-body did, but removing it is one of the best things you can do.

Most Harley riders remove the mufflers, because you know, loud pipes save lives and all.

(whoo someone with the same engine!)

Not sure what a u-bend is, but if it's a u-shaped bend in the exhaust (wow, imagine that!) then no, my car doesn't have one.

How cheap could I expect to find a magnaflow?

Kinja'd!!!1

I sold my Impala years ago, but I did do tons of modifications to the thing I know the L36 and L67 like the back of my hand :). The u-bend is a stupid little thing they did to make the O2 sensor fit. Instead of mounting it horizontally, they mounted it vertically and literally created a u-bend in the pipe so it would clear the body. Stupid stupid stupid thing.

I got my Magnaflows off another Impala owner. He upgraded to Borlas (2006 SS) and sold me both mufflers and tips for $80. Hell of a steal.

Did you do any performance modifications to the L36? Anything sub-$100 you could recommend?

Oh, look. Glasspacks are cheap. http://www.amazon.com/Flowtech-50250…

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Looks like I could fit that where my resonator is now, lop off the stock muffler, and boom-de-yadda suddenly an uncharacteristically loud Buick.

That looks like a factory muffler with a magnaflow branded tip. I'd say no. Sub-100 mods for L36? For the Impalas, that would be a 9C1 PCM (junkyard 50 bucks lol), gut the airbox (remove baffles and embiggen intake port), install factory spark plugs because iridium, and beefier plug wires. The coils are super powerful, moreso than MSD replacements, so don't do that. After all that, you get into more expensive stuff.

Kansas Statutes Chapter 8, Article 17, Section 39:

8-1739.Mufflers and noise suppressing systems. (a) Every vehicle shall be equipped, maintained and operated so as to prevent excessive or unusual noise. Every motor vehicle at all times shall be equipped with a muffler or other effective noise suppressing system in good working order and in constant operation, and no person shall use a muffler cut-out, bypass or similar device.

Local laws may also apply.

Now... if you found a used muffler and took a sledge hammer and some rebar and busted out the insides and then installed it, you may get a ticket for noise pollution, but you wont get a ticket for no muffler.

Kinja'd!!!1

Sorry lol. 9C1 PCM - Powertrain Control Module from a "9C1" (or 9C3) Police Package Impala. Airbox - look under your filter. See those baffles? Cut 'em out. Look at your filter. Is only one part dirty, a circle about 3'' diameter? You're not getting good airflow that's the only place sucking air. Cut that out. Make the box bigger and air passage less cramped. The factory plugs were iridium, most people replace with standard plugs. L36s lurve their iridium, get a set of factory plugs because.

Awesome, thanks for the explanation! Since our cars have the same powertrain, I wonder if a 9C1 PCM would work in a Buick LeSabre? This is worth experimenting with.

GM PCMs are finicky as all get out. But if you get one for next to nothing, there's no harm in giving it a try for science

So I was having a look through my airbox, which seems pretty damn open and free-flowing, and I found these. Is this the PCM? No markings on it I could see other than "Do not overtorque these bolts you idiot"
